Wagina Island is home to around 2,000 people whose families have already endured displacement and rebuilt their lives on this small Pacific island.Surrounded by coral reefs, lagoons and some of the richest marine environments on Earth, the people of Wagina depend heavily on the land and sea for food, income and their way of life.Years ago, they successfully fought plans to turn much of their island into a bauxite mine.Now the mine is back.And once again, the people of Wagina are saying NO! Help make sure they are heard.

The Mine Came Back.
Wagina Island is once again facing the threat of large-scale bauxite mining.The previous proposal would have affected around 60% of the island. Residents fought it for years and won.Now the project is back.The people of Wagina should not have to keep fighting until someone finally gets the answer they want.They said NO then and they say NO now! That should matter.
The Result Will Be Catastrophic Damage

Wagina is a remote tropical island surrounded by reefs, lagoons and clear Pacific waters.Its forests, coastline and marine environment are not just beautiful. They provide food, income and resources for the people who live there.Mining could change that landscape permanently.Once an island is damaged, you cannot simply put it back the way it was.

Wagina Is Not a Mine. Wagina Is Home!
Around 2,000 people call Wagina home.Many are descendants of I-Kiribati families who were relocated there generations ago and built a new life on the island.Today, families depend heavily on fishing, gardening and seaweed farming.They have already experienced displacement.They should not have to fight to keep their home again.
A new mine will see the clearance of one of the last old growth forests!
Our Final Chance To Save The Last Of The Old Growth Forests
Wagina Island contains significant areas of untouched primary forest and pristine old-growth ecosystems with natural forest covering roughly 85% of its land.The upstream sections of the island's waterways, such as the Seleana River, support rare, highly valued old-growth mahogany mangroves.Solomon Bauxite Limited plan an open-pit mine covering over half the island, which would cause severe deforestation, soil erosion, and runoff damage to local marine life.
